about

After the successful Room 26 sessions (see ZB033), Larry took the plunge and got himself a Fostex four-track recorder. The goal of having one was not to circumvent the studio experience, nor to use it merely for recording Fussbudgets demos; instead, inspired by the ability to multitrack, and being a longtime reader of album production credits, Larry was smitten by the idea of trying things out on his own—of learning on the fly. The band's other songwriter, Chris Lehmann showed little avidity in arranging or producing, so when the two would get together to record Chris laid down his guitar and vocal in a single take, and Larry overdubbed his parts on top of that. Larry's railroad apartment provided ample opportunity to find natural reverb in its hallways, nooks and crannies, and ambient 'mistakes' were often left in the mix if they were deemed interesting. For Larry's songs, the structure was the same: guitar and vocal to start, and Chris would then supply what other elements it was decided the song needed.

Being believers in constraints—and in using what was on hand—'drums' were such things as empty milk containers, and percussion—aside from a trustworthy tambourine—was everything from boxes of nails and bottles of aspirin, to pencils clacked together. Given the coziness of Larry's home studio, amps of choice tended to be Chris' Silvertone guitar built-in-case model, and a cheap no-name transistor amp that was another thrift store find.

So are these “demos”? A few of the songs eventually made the transition to more formal recording, but the intent here was to create a final product, regardless of methodology.

about

The Fussbudgets San Francisco, California

The Fussbudgets were formed in 1987 in San Francisco, by Larry O. Dean (Malcontent, Post Office, The Me Decade, The Injured Parties) and Chris Lehmann (The Charm Offensive) with bassist Ned Doherty (All Ones, Mushroom). They recorded a series of cassette-only releases that were sporadically distributed, but which received glowing reviews in the US and UK press, as well as local radio airplay. ... more
