about

These recordings from The Fussbudgets feature the band's two songwriters, Larry O. Dean and Chris Lehmann, in their earliest studio sessions. The two met shortly after Larry's relocation to San Francisco from Michigan, and after amassing enough material they decided the next step was to record. Larry had become friendly with Steve Shaw, the manager of local record store Streetlight Records, and through casual conversation learned Shaw had his own studio nearby. Without hearing anything Shaw had recorded, Larry was assured it would be a good match owing to Shaw's musical taste as well as sense of humor. (For example, at a stopping point during one of their first sessions, Shaw jumped up and coaxed the two songwriters to follow him downstairs to Market Street; the photo shop below dumped their unclaimed pictures on that day and time, and the trio spent the rest of the night gazing at a slew of abandoned strange and sad snapshots—off the clock, of course.)

Larry and Chris returned two years later for more recording. By then, they had officially adopted the name The Fussbudgets (after perversely playing every gig under a different name, which is not exactly ideal for “brand recognition”) and added bassist Ned Doherty to the fold, though these tracks only feature the duo augmented with keyboards by Shaw.

The Fussbudgets were formed in 1987 in San Francisco, by Larry O. Dean (Malcontent, Post Office, The Me Decade, The Injured Parties) and Chris Lehmann (The Charm Offensive) with bassist Ned Doherty (All Ones, Mushroom). They recorded a series of cassette-only releases that were sporadically distributed, but which received glowing reviews in the US and UK press, as well as local radio airplay. ... more
